Boskalis Achieves Significant Emission Reductions with BluEco® Shore Power System

December 16, 2024

Challenges

  • Replace diesel-powered generators at Boskalis’ Waalhaven service center in Rotterdam to reduce emissions and noise pollution.
  • Support both moored vessels and land-based electrical equipment with green shore power.
  • Align with Boskalis’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy.

Solutions

  • BluEco® Shore Power System: Delivered a large-scale shore power facility enabling vessels to switch off diesel generators and connect to green shore power.
  • Integrated Design & Delivery: Blueday Technology handled the project’s design, engineering, supply, installation, and commissioning.
  • Sustainable Grid Connection: Boskalis sourced green power from Rotterdam Shore Power, a joint venture between Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, with renewable energy originating from Dutch wind and solar sources.

Results

  • 2 GWh of green electricity generated annually.
  • 1,600 tons of CO₂ emissions avoided per year, significantly reducing Boskalis’ carbon footprint.
  • Improved air quality through reduced particulate matter and nitrogen emissions.
  • Enhanced local living environment with lower noise levels from docked vessels.

Sustainability Impact

The shore power installation supports Boskalis’ broader sustainability initiatives, including renewable energy adoption and reducing environmental impact across its global operations. Co-financed by the City of Rotterdam and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund, the project showcases a collaborative approach to achieving cleaner ports and greener infrastructure.
